India’s first bullet train will run 100 km between Surat and Vapi by August 2027, as part of the 508 km Mumbai–Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor.

India’s dream of running its first bullet train is moving closer to reality, with Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announcing that the country’s maiden high-speed train will start operations on a 100-kilometre stretch between Surat and Vapi by August 2027. This will be the first functional section of the ambitious Ahmedabad–Mumbai High-Speed Rail (HSR) corridor.

The minister confirmed that the initial operational run of the bullet train, which was earlier planned between Surat and Bilimora over a 50 km stretch, has now been extended to cover the 100 km distance up to Vapi. This extension reflects the rapid progress of civil and track-related works along the corridor.

The full high-speed rail project spans 508 kilometres, connecting Sabarmati (Ahmedabad) to Mumbai. Once completed, the bullet train will run at speeds of up to 320 km per hour, sharply reducing travel time between the two major cities.

According to Ashwini Vaishnaw, the journey between Mumbai and Ahmedabad will take just 1 hour 58 minutes on trains with limited stops. For services halting at all 12 stations along the corridor, the travel time will be approximately 2 hours 17 minutes. This marks a dramatic improvement compared to current rail and road travel durations, which often range between 6 to 8 hours.

The minister emphasised that the Surat–Vapi section will serve as a crucial demonstration of India’s high-speed capabilities, showcasing advanced rail technology, modern infrastructure, and world-class passenger amenities.

Delays Due to Land Acquisition, But Work Now in Full Swing

The foundation stone for the Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train corridor was laid in 2017, with the original target for completion set for December 2023. However, the project faced multiple delays, mainly due to land acquisition challenges and other administrative hurdles across different states.

Despite these setbacks, Vaishnaw stated that construction activity is now progressing at a strong pace. Major viaducts, stations, and supporting infrastructure are being built simultaneously. The government is treating this as a flagship project that will define the future of high-speed rail in India.

Officials have indicated that once the initial 100 km section becomes operational, it will not only serve passengers but also act as a live testbed for operations, safety systems, crew training, and maintenance protocols for the larger corridor.

PM Modi Impressed with Progress on Surat Section

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw also referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Surat station, where he reviewed the ongoing works related to the high-speed rail corridor. During this visit, the Prime Minister expressed satisfaction over the pace of construction and the quality of engineering being implemented.

The Surat region is emerging as a key node on the bullet train route, with significant work on stations, tracks, and associated infrastructure. The Surat–Vapi segment, in particular, is expected to become a high-demand stretch due to the strong industrial and commercial linkages between these areas.

Bullet Train Project Aims to Usher in a New Era of Rail Travel

The Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train corridor is being seen as a turning point for India’s railway system. With world-class speeds, reduced travel time, and enhanced passenger comfort, the project is expected to set new benchmarks in rail travel standards.
